Te Kauri Lodge
Te Kauri Lodge is New Zealand’s first eco-educational centre. Nestled in a stunning scenic reserve, Te Kauri Lodge has old style charm.
The Lodge has underpinned New Zealand’s eco interface, forest protection and natural history education for over 50 years. Just inland from Kawhia, within two hours’ drive of Auckland and one hour from Hamilton, the lodge is surrounded by a blend of ancient and regrowth Tawa Podocarp forest in a rugged limestone landscape. It is the gateway to 1,100ha of native bush, 500-year-old kauri, stunning karst landscapes, wetlands and wildlife, providing an outdoor experience that is hard to beat!
With a range of walking tracks right on the doorstep, Te Kauri Lodge is an affordable venue for schools, other groups and events and is enjoyed by 1000+ people each year.
Conservation Project Details
You can help. $1.00 from every night’s stay goes toward conservation of the reserve. Why not sponsor a bait station? Support conservation in Te Kauri Park Scenic Reserve by sponsoring a bait station for just $25. These bait stations help to protect tui nests from rats.
Te Kauri Lodge is owned by the Hamilton Junior Naturalists Club (Junats), who celebrated 50 years of successful operation this in 2010 and have introduced many thousands of children to our natural world and continue to do so. The Te Kauri Waikuku Trust also coordinates a forest restoration and educational program at the Lodge that is used by numerous schools. For many children this is their first experience of our New Zealand bush. After a generous donation of land by local farmers Doug and Ngaire Anderson, the lodge buildings were started over 57 years ago and still function as a conservation centre today.
Te Kauri Lodge
The lodge continues as a fantastic venue for teaching thousands of school children about their natural heritage, and as a venue for adult groups from businesses and clubs to learn more about their environment, conservation and our native flora and fauna. With a wide range of accommodation, the lodge is ideal for businesses wanting conference or retreat facilities, groups wanting diverse ecological training, or just to experience the amazing range of wilderness possibilities available. Bordering on 1100 hectares of DoC reserve with a range of tracks and trails, bluffs and caves centres from the lodge, it is a hikers’ heaven. An on-site educator is available to schools and other groups staying at the Lodge.
